Visit 1 - Things in the Sky, Moon phases, and Constellations

  • Astronomer introduction, discussion about things in the Sky (5-10 minutes)
    • What do we see when we look up into the sky? Make a list. Of the things we see, which ones are "in space"?
  • Teacher reads a story about space to class (10 minutes)
  • Moon phases (20 minutes)
    • Have you seen the Moon before? Can you draw a picture of the Moon you saw? Compare with picture another student drew. Discover that the Moon changes its shape, sometime round, sometimes half, sometimes crescent.
    • Try making the phases with a styrofoam ball. You're head can be the Earth, the Moon is represented by the ball, and the light bulb is the Sun.
  • Computer Sky Show (20 minutes)
    • Let's watch the Sun set.
    • What will the Moon look like the night of the Star Party? Zoom in to look closely at the Moon.
    • What's a "constellation"? Show some pictures of three different constellations.
    • If time, let's look at a part of the sky and make OUR OWN constellations.
